The water sprites liked to play, and the town needed their help to find enough fish to eat. So the town made a trade. They would anchor someone to a pole in the bay, and the water sprites could play with them in exchange for bringing in fish to be caught.
The remains of the last guy to be put out there were a good reminder to only send women out to the pole. Some were volunteers, others were prisoners working off a sentence, but all of them needed help walking after the day was over. They also had a silly grin on their face, and could barely talk, so there were several who were repeat volunteers, though for sanity's sake were limited to once per month.
She had heard her big sister talk about playing with the sprites, and had decided that she wanted to give it a try. Now, standing in the water, feeling the first fingers rub up her leg, she was starting to wonder if there might be such as thing as too much fun.
